Different Strokes for Different Folks

I taught at Lake Arrowhead Resort and Spa yesterday.
One of my Advanced Students came to observe the
class, as she had agreed to teach for me while I
study with my teachers in January. I taught the class
and afterwards she said that she had never seen me
teach in this way (she has been studying with my for
5 years). At first I had no idea what she was talking
about. How could this class be different from what I
had been teaching her for so many years. But then I
realized that the class was different. I had taken
into account the many needs of the students- which
were very unique for each person. For at the
beginning of each and every class I ask the students
to tell me their names, any injuries they have, any
specific areas they want me to focus on- etc. This
makes each and every class completely different
depending on the needs. On the way home in the car, I
thought about how creative one must be to teach yoga
in this way. We, as teachers, hear the needs of the
students, immediately develop a practice to meet the
needs and then deliver! It is challenging and
energizing to work in this way. I love it!
