Yoga Therapy for the Individual In Person or Via Internet Video Conference Call

Mountain Picture
As a student advances in the journey of yoga, it becomes clear that group classes can only transform us physically, emotionally and spiritually to a certain degree. We begin to understand that each of us has a unique physiology, skeletal muscular structure, energy patterns, mind disturbances and emotional trauma. To heal these areas of the body and mind a very specific yoga therapy program must be followed on a daily basis. If a student has low back issues, a group yoga class has the potential to help or hurt the low back depending on what is being taught to the group as a whole. When studying individually with a teacher, only the helpful asanas and pranayamas are chosen for the practice.

Yoga therapy must be done on an individual basis with the help of a qualified teacher. This teacher must be knowledgeable in which tools are helpful for certain injuries and illnesses. The teacher must be confident that they can help the student to heal, as the student may need comfort and confidence that they are doing the right practice. Amy is certified in the KHYF tradition as a Yoga Teacher, a Yoga Teacher Trainer and she is now in the process of
completing a four-year training as a Yoga Therapist in the tradition of T. Krishnamacharya.

It is always best to do yoga therapy in person. However, the resources that travel requires in time, energy and money sometimes make it easier if the student and the teacher do not have to leave the comfort of their own home. If you have a camera on your home computer the lesson can be conducted via ichat, AOL IM, or Skype video conferencing. The best picture and sound will come from a connection with a mac computer and the ichat program, as this is what Amy uses to have lessons with her students all over the world. Once you have the camera (about $100), the actual call is free of charge. All you have to do is schedule a time with Amy, exchange video addresses and check time the time zone and the lesson can be scheduled! Email amy using the "Contact Amy" page of this web site to schedule your lesson today!

If you decide to sing-up for yoga therapy sessions with Amy, here is what you can expect:

Amy will expect you to be self-motivated to take responsibility for your own health. She will anticipate that you will do the practice daily that is given to you by the end of the session. Please take a moment o think about if you are ready for a daily commitment of this type before you proceed.

All sessions will last 50 minutes.

Sessions will be at a mutually agreed upon venue. She has offices in San Bernardino and Lake Arrowhead. Amy only travels to the student's home in rare cases when they are not able to travel to her for health reasons.

Amy will conduct a short telephone interview and if she thinks she can assist you in your healing she will send you a questionnaire. She would like you to fill out the questionnaire before you arrive and bring it to your first session. See below.

The first session will be primarily an intake session. Amy will us the ancient yogic techniques of parsanam (observation of the body in reference postures and observation of the bio-mechanical movements of your body), spasanam (taking pulse as a diagnostic tool) and darsanam (a thorough interview with questions about your symptoms, goals, preferences, lifestyle and eating habits).

The second session will take place 2-3 days later and this is when you will receive your first yoga practice. In some cases we need to combine the first and second practices because of travel needs. The two session together with last 1 hour and 45 minutes. After you are given your practice Amy will ask you to go home and try the practice for 3-4 days. She will then call you to see if the practice is producing the desired effects.

The third session together will be 1-2 weeks after your first visit. The practice will be modified as needed and deepened with more subtle yoga tools at this time.

The fourth-sixth practices will be given on an as needed basis and will happen within 2 months of the first meeting.

The goal is that you would continue your yoga therapy practice as preventative medicine and to ease symptoms, and that over time you would no longer need to see Amy for this particular illness or issue. If you should feel after some time that you would like to connect again and strengthen your practice, Amy will be happy to meet with you. However, because yoga is about self-empowerment, a dependency between care provider and care seeker will not ensue.

If you should find that you have another illness or concern, the entire process would start again.

Amy charges $90 per session. She would like you to pay for the 3-session package when you commit to the program. If you choose to do so, she will offer the 3-session package for $240 instead of $270. This fee includes multiple short phone calls as check-ins to see how your are progressing. Payment with international students will need to be wired or a bank check can be sent to Amy.

If you would like to sign-up for yoga therapy with Amy, please fill out the
"Contact Amy" page on the web site. Be sure to give her your phone number and she will call you at her earliest convenience.

Below are the Intake Form and the Release Waiver that Amy would like you to fill out and bring to your first session. There are some parts of the Intake Form that Amy will fill out during the first session.
